Prelude ............................................................. 11
Before me is a familiar path. It is covered with snow, icy and dark. I begin to follow it. I give thanks for my warm skin shoes and the buffalo robe that is wrapped around me. And I follow the path.
I look ahead and there is the most magnificent sight I have ever seen. The mountains are rugged and tall, covered with snow, hidden behind clouds. At their base, streams of water sparkle with yellow hues. The ground is covered with deep snow. Clouds shift and the mountain tops peek through them like ghosts through a window. I am engulfed in this magical moment. I am home. The white flag is blowing on the gate.
"They are right," she says. "Time is only man-made. Time-there is none. Time-there is some. Here, we have no time. Here, we have nothing but peace. Here we have the totality of Will. Here we are at the beginning point in the center of the wheel. The sacred spiral moves out from here. The levels are complex and each stone is the way. Each memory is the moment. Some are as old as the fire, and some are as young as a water droplet. He knows those things. You know those things."
I hear the wind howling fiercely, banging up against the old hut. It is an interesting place made of sticks and various types of logs. They had made a mud paste and shoved bark, moss and grass in between each piece of wood. The hut is fairly large - a huge, round room. There is a fire in the center with the smoke spiraling out through the top. There are two beds - one on one side and one on the other - and old chairs made from tree limbs. Many herbs hang from the ceiling. On one side are beautiful tapestries, four of them, one for each of the four seasons. They are unique, for they are three-dimensional, made out of real objects - real stones, real twigs, real flower petals. They hang on the side of the hut where we are standing. A beautiful rug is on the floor. It looks like it was made from all different colored socks and it has beautiful buttons tied on it.
I drop my head and sing a Prayer. I hear the soft, gentle beat of the drum, the call of the glistening path, the sparkling stars. I breathe in and out and start to rise up way beyond my physical mortal life. I stand in the silence of the snow. I hear it touch my hair. I see the large flakes floating. On each flake, there is a light - a tiny star sparkling. I see the glint of color as each snowflake flutters by.
I feel the soft gentle kiss he gives me in the sunshine. I pledge my love eternally and I know the depth of Prayer that I have petitioned for all my life. I whisper in his ear that I hope all humankind find this love. I see Grandfather/Grandmother Wolf's hands - the dark paw and the light paw. I see the couples around the circle show their Strength in love as they all hold hands, completing the circle.
His eyes are a piercing black and he has the most pleasant smile. I love his voice. "You must remember, Wolf, it's about courage. Courage medicine is what carries us across the river. It's what's brought you to the Blue-Eyed Raven. Congratulations, by the way," he smiles. "But your work is not over. You must understand soul retrieval. You must help her, for her soul is lost. That means she has too many holes, holes, holes."
The voice of the cedar tree circles through my mind and opens my thoughts to Understanding. I walk on in the lush forest. There are ferns, bird songs that I have never heard before. The path is made of pine needles and cedar. As I walk, I can tell I am climbing. I am going higher. I reach the top, and look out over the ocean. It goes on to infinity. There is a stillness on the mountaintop. Everything is quiet.
It's important that we start in the spirit - the East gate. We are in the spirit because, though we live in the physical realm, we are always in a medicine wheel. As we walk into the medicine wheel in a symbolic way, we always start in the East and walk clockwise. Each time we cross a stone, we understand something more. It's interesting to go up the line of lessons -- the cross in the middle of the wheel -- because you're standing in a gate, and you always walk forward to do the lessons. As you complete one line of lessons, walking around the burgundy lesson clockwise, you come back through the same lessons. So, walking the lessons is what the students have learned, and we walk past the same lesson over and over and over in life.
As I gather my medicine tools and bundle them up, I look at the candles before me and feel my mind quiet down. I see an opening in the ocean. I know this is where I am to go. I draw on the energy of my soul and walk through the opening. I enter into the deepest part of spirit. It is very quiet; the burgundy color is so intense it is black.
I take off my medicine coat, hold my black hat in my hand, and watch them go. Those seven have been something. They are wonderful students, with me a long time, and here I stand in the East gate ready to go again. They'll take a rest and they'll be back. They have seen the East section, the South, the West, and the North section, and they have learned their medicine from each one. Now they are ready to go to the center, to study Sweet Medicine.
