Into the Medicine
Wheel
I know them. There is Eagle Woman, one who cries for her heritage, for her knowledge and her existence. And Mouse Hunter, one who seeks fame and to be good enough. There is Tall Woman, the one who has her head in the sky and knows nothing but to keep up with others to hide her own inadequacies. I see Black Horse. I see River Horse. I see Fading Deer and Ghost Sky.
"We must follow him. Listen to his words. He will teach you how to understand. He will show you. He has shown me." I turn, look at him sternly, and say, "Be careful, though, for he is the King, and he knows of what he speaks. He is the guardian of the South. He is the one who holds within him playfulness and trickery. He holds trust and innocence. He is the King of Growth and you must be careful."
I watch the hummingbird lift up off his hand and hover like a helicopter. It flies backwards and darts in front of us. It trembles over the rose bush and then moves beyond. I see very clearly. The lesson of clarity is at hand. I could cry for many moons, year upon year, in sadness and grief over death. Or I could see what I see in front of me.
Oh, my head is spinning. Things are getting very s-l-o-w. Very s-t-i-l-l. Noises feel like pins sticking in me. "Oh, I really dislike this." An extreme hostility begins to roll over me. All around me things are becoming very, very orange, very, very hot. He begins to play the flute again, and it pierces me. Each note seems to be burning into me. Unh!
I am alone. In the quietness of the morning the sun has risen again. There is no camp. Just me. I am sitting inside a square of golden cord with four white flags that blow in the breeze. The hawk circles overhead. I simply sit with the sun and the moon, and the seven stars. And I remember.
We moved up and out through the top of her home, and from limb to limb all through the forest. I see the splendor and the fairness of the animal kingdom--how they take care of their kind. I see the tender, loving tongues caressing the cubs. The blessing of the forest is its quietness. As we fly, it is so quiet you can hear our wings moving.
In the quiet of the night the silver shimmer arcs above her. "Remember me? I am Grandmother Moon. The fullness of my name is Grandmother Blue Moon. I am the full energy of Grandmother Moon. The stories of Mother God are mine to give."
I look at the woman and ask her name. "I'm White Owl Woman. Listen to me. Everyone dies, within both worlds. Within time you must descend. Within time you will step forth into a place beyond, where ancestors and elders live, where peace comes into your heart. You must understand it is a gift of life to die."
"It is Great. Great is the leader; great is critical; it's serious, it's lofty. It's countless, unlimited, and spacious. All of these attributes are yours, Granddaughter. For many years, you have followed your vision of the sun, the moon, and the seven stars and you have never once asked about your parents. You have never once come to me and asked me to tell you the story of your parents and who they are."
Outside the circle I see blackness--it is pitch-black. I hear the chanting of an old one, a voice in the night. Around the medicine wheel the students dance. I say to them, "It is your choice now." I hear the eagle-bone whistle. I hear the calling of the spirit. I look around on both sides to see what elder has emerged. There is no one, just the roll of thunder, the quiet of the night. Darkness.

A Totally New Approach to Your Emotional Life Develop a better understanding of your emotions and learn how to successfully heal emotional hurts. Here, you'll find expert guidance from a Native American shaman, who, drawing on her Osage and Cherokee heritage, her personal mystical visions, and her training in modern psychology, has been teaching these magical techniques for nearly three decades. Using the Rainbow Medicine Wheel, twelve fascinating ceremonies have been adapted to guide you to inner strength and peace. Begin by creating a sacred space where you are encircled by a wheel made of cornmeal and cleansed by the softly rising smoke of smoldering herbs. There you bring your spirit journal and other sacred tools, all clearly explained, and venture into vision with lessons from the entities of the spirit world. Each chapter features a shamanic story, a ceremony, and a vision, to help you become more deeply in touch with the "dance of life" that takes you into the world of spirit, where you are both physical and spiritual, a person who stands on the earth and rides the wind.
